I arrived in Rome at around 9 this morning. They gave us free tea and some sort of Italian cake with dried fruit. I love free food these days. I dropped off my things at the Hostel and went to the Vatican, even though the Pope isn't there these days which is a disapointment because he is supposed to be at the Vatican until August. The good thing was that the Vatican was free today. I had to wait in line for about 45 minutes, which I didn't find too bad and then you got to go through security. They weren't too strict with what people were wearing - some were allowed in with short shorts and tank tops. I'm not sure if that is because the Pope is gone or what.
The first thing I saw was the picture gallery, which had all sorts of Christian Art. Next, I went to see early Christian art which had plenty of sarcophages from the beginning of AD. Next, there was a museum of ancient Roman Art, which even had Mummies and then I finally saw the Sistine Chapel. My photos are horrible because my flash doesn't work. I left the Vatican Museum around 230 and went to line up to get into Saint Peter's Basilica. The line was super long but moved really quickly. It only took about 15 minutes to get in. I looked around and took lots of pictures - but they're all dark. There is Saint Peter's tomb in the middle. I then went to the gift shop. Saint Peter's Museum had already closed for the day. When I went back to the Basilica, a mass was starting so I went in. Usually that part of the Basilica is closed, but when you attend mass you get to see the altar and Saint Peter's tomb from closer. The mass was really nice even though it was all in Italian - I could pretty much follow from knowing the order of the mass. There was a choir and the organ and some nuns attending mass. I am now back at the hostel thinking of where I should go and eat since all I've eaten today is that cake from the train and breakfast. PS. I am happy they were sold out of cheaper 6 person sleepers because the 4 person one was super squished.
