Rome: The Eternal City. I don't know if I can even comment on the splendor of Rome. I loved my weekend there and I think I would go back again, but I don't know if I'd want to live there.
I definitely made use of the public transportation more than I've EVER done in Florence. It was almost a necessity in order to get around Rome. There's so much to see in so little time. However, my friends and I did it! We saw all Rome had to offer (with the exception of a few sites- i.e. the Gardens)
Instead of commenting on every single place, I'd like to substitute an itinerary.
Friday (starting at 8:30am): Castel St. Angelo (to see one of the best views in Rome), St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican (and the museum).
Saturday: (again, bright and early-8:30am): Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and the Capuchin Bone Church, and La Bocca della Verità (the mouth of truth)
Sunday: the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and Capitol Hill.
So, some highlights:
I got more blisters in this weekend than I've obtained in the 2 months I was in Florence. This isn't saying that I didn't receive blisters in Florence- because I have (lots!); this is rather to emphasize the fact that I couldn't physically stand on my feet anymore during parts of the day. All I wanted to do was sit when we reached the Basilica and they wouldn't let anyone sit :( So the only way I could get away with sitting was to kneel on the ground and act like I was praying- is that bad? I'm not sure, but all I knew was that my feet were in the most pain I've ever felt.
I think the Trevi fountain is most beautiful at night. It's lovely in the day time, but it looks 10x more beautiful at night.
I tried some of the best gelato I've had yet at a place called Giolitti. The Caramel flavor was the closest to Ice Cream (the american version) I've ever tasted.
The Colosseum was by far my favorite part of the weekend! It was.... incredible. I wanted to spend all day inside. I simply sat along the walls where thousands of years ago ancient Roman peasants sat and tried to imagine it in it's full glory. It was marvelous.
Apart from always losing one of our group mates and being physically harassed (butt pinching) by disgusting men, Rome was fabulous ^_^
