Hi folks, Dave & Amy are back! I woke up today with a feeling of guilt since I talked everyone into trying the introductory dive the day before and none of us went through with it, wasting the extra money it costs compared to if we just booked the snorkeling tour.  Even worse was the disappointment in myself that I couldn't go through with it, but I guess it is not for everyone and today is a new day.  We considered booking a tour for today to either go to Cape Tribulation (but is similar to what we did in Kuranda), go on a crab fishing boat (was too pricey and too grandpaish for us), or go whitewater rafting (saving that for New Zealand), so instead we slept in and decided to have a relaxing day in Cairns. 

Since we missed breakfast, we decided to walk to Rusty’s Fruit Market to start the day.  The market is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and contains numerous booths that sell, you guessed it, fruit (there is also food stalls and handcrafts).   Like everything else in Australia (animals, plants, words), you can find numerous fruits that don’t exist anywhere else in the world.  We walked around the market trying all different types of fruits.  One fruit in particular that I was looking for was the lemonade fruit (looks like a lime, but the juice is supposed to taste just like lemonade), but could not find it anywhere.  Thinking I had the name wrong, I bought a few pieces that looked like limes, but had different names.  One of them had to taste like lemonade.  I also got a custard apple to eat a little later in the day.  Being hungry for something more substantial, we grabbed a table and got some Vietnamese food as I had a poor taste in my mouth from the "Vietnamese food" we ate in Kuranda.  Much better this time. 

As we finished up lunch, we decided to walk towards the water in the direction of the casino.  Every city we have been to in Australia has a casino, and I have managed to stay away until now.  But we had extra time and I need to redeem myself from my poor 0-2-1 gambling record for this trip.  We arrived at the fairly small casino and I immediately notice the very high minimums ($20 for blackjack) at the table games.  This was a little more than I wanted to spend, so it looks like I was going to play on the machines.  Amy took a seat in the café with the local paper and Ken went to check out the horse races.  My first go around was at the video roulette, but my $10 went really quickly.  Next I decided to head to a game with better odds, blackjack.  It started off really rocky, but I was able to fight my way back and double my money after playing for an hour or so.  Wanting to quit while I was ahead, I made my way back to the café to meet up with Amy and Ken and have a celebratory beer and enjoy the fruit we purchased.  The custard apple was very starchy (probably needs to be cooked first) and the 3 limes with weird names tasted like limes (a little sour to bite into) instead of lemonade.  Just hanging around a casino is usually a bad idea for me as I decided to give the roulette machine one more try.  So I head back over, giving it the mean stare that scuba might have beaten me, but not the roulette machine, and on the first spin I hit a number.  I immediately collected my money, enough to pay for the mistake of paying for scuba instead snorkeling. 

Having a new step in my bounce we walked along the Esplanade to head back to our hotel.  We stopped at the very large pool (you can’t swim in the ocean in Cairns because of the large numbers of box jelly fish which will kill you if you get stung) to enjoy the view of the people and the water.  The weather was perfect, but we did not bring our bathing suits, so we decided to continue to stroll along the water to eventually make it to the pool at our hotel.  Perhaps we were strolling too long as the sun was starting to go down, so instead we picked up a six pack and relaxed in the lounge chairs as the sun completely set which gave us a nice buzz for dinner.  For those that don’t know, Amy typically eats Greek food at least once every other day.  We have now gone close to 70 days without real Greek food, so that was the plans for the evening.  We ordered a bottle of wine to go along with Zorba’s feast which consisted of a tasting of just about every Greek food you could imagine.  The place was very authentic as the waiters and waitresses (we had 4 of them running around) were disorganized, the owner was crude (he made some funny comments and hand gestures towards the waitresses), and the food was excellent.  Three hours later our meal was finished and headed back to the hotel for the evening.

We had a bottle of wine, not a bottle of beer. Would have been odd for the 3 of us to share a bottle of beer.
