i think everything i have read about hanoi talks about how wonderful the vietnamese water puppet show is.

But in reality it is poor. well the show we saw was poor. we went to the famous water puppetry theatre here in hanoi, the idea seemed great, watch some puppets, in water, in a nice dark cool theatre, escape from the heat and hustle for an hour, great.

we get there, are shown to our seats, which were fine, until one freakishly tall asian woman was sat down in front of me, blocking most of my view.

first of all the musicians came out and played a few traditional pieces of music for us and told us a little about this traditional instrument called a dan bo, which i liked, as danbo is my name. traditionally young women were banned from listening to music from this instrument as it was feared that they would fall in love with the man playing the instrument due to the beautiful sounds it makes, and it does make a lovely noise.

the musicians were not very professional, lots of talking amonst themselves and giggling, now i understand the giggling, they were laughing at us, the mugs wasting an hour of our lives!

the show started, and the puppets appeared. and it was just budget. they just sort of flopped about in the water. banged into each other and didn't seem very coordinated at all. at one point one of their arms fell off. i really wanted to like this . but as it is clear from what i'm writing. i did not.

one thing i did enjoy was the aussie guy behind us. he gave a running commentry on how shit he was finding it, so at least i knew we were not alone in our lack of enjoyment. the woman next to me fell asleep and a couple of people walked out halfway through.

i was very pleased when it finished.

we went back to the rooftop cafe from yesterday and had another round of yoghurt shakes, which were perfect and ice cold.

all in all, despite lots of people i've spoken to loving hanoi, i don't. in fact i can't wait to get out of this city. i don't even have any desire to go and explore it as i just don't want to leave the hostel most of the time. i guess some cities are just not for some people. i imagine that this place when it is not sweltering it a lot easier to handle. as the heat just makes me angry anyway, so throw heat, twenty million mopeds and rude people into the mix and you get one grumpy danielle.

thinking will have another balcony picnic for dinner tonight, as it is very nice up here.
