Skip got up and went to camp as usual. If his team won both games they play today, they will wind up the winners of the Fantasy Camp.  I got up about 8:30 and headed to the course about 9:30. The Red (or Heritage) course today. Most people like this course. I prefer the Gold, but I played it yesterday, or should I say it played me yesterday. Got a ride to the course and headed to the Red Course Tees. Starter said the two guys I was playing with were in the "shack." Went in and met Tony and Don. They were Canadians, eh?

It's interesting that you meet many different people on a golf course, and these folks were some of the best I have ever met. We warmed up to each other easily as we played. They were both in the insurance business, running a company that did claims estimating for insurance companies. They had even worked for State Farm in the past. Small world.

We all played well on some holes, but poorly on others. But boy, we had fun. Most fun I've had playing golf as I can recall in a long time. We told jokes, laughed, made fun of each other and just had a great time playing golf. Silly stuff on the course, for example, Tony loved, when we got to a green with a huge mound on it, and I said, "Well, I think we know where they buried the elephant, don't we?" Silly stuff like that. And I played very well...44-38 = 82. As poorly as I played yesterday, is as well as I played today.

We ended up in the bar (can I see your shocked face????).  We had a few beers and exchanged phone numbers to text each other more jokes.  Tony sent me lots and we laughed.  We took the golf shuttle back to their condo to drop them off and then the guy dropped me off.  Skip was already there.  They had won both games today and won the Fantasy Camp....very cool.

We had a cocktail and got ready for the banquet.  It was in the Wigwam ballroom.  All the White Sox players, participants in the camp and guests were invited.  Lots of fun, jokes and "dissing" from the podium.  Melton spoke, Paciorek spoke and they introduced all the players, giving them signed baseballs.  Then they introduced Skip's team, saying they would send them a gift for winning the first place soon.

I was very surprised to see Dena Stone from State Farm at the banquet.  I had hired her into Air Travel many years ago.  She since has moved to Systems.  She was with a group of people from up in Wenona and Minonk.  Haven't seen her in several years.  Great to see her.

Banquet was very cool.  Unfortunately, they announced due to low attendance (85 this year), they were going to take a year off from doing camp next year, but revamp it and resume it in 2014.  Sad to see it go.  It was a great time.

I think I learned some lessons from this.  Not sure I will attend the Cubs Fantasy Camp next year, but it at least has piqued my interest.  And if I don't spend the money, the kids will!!!  I also learned that there are players who played the game for the sheer love of the game, not for the money.  That made me feel good...people like Rich Dotson who said the things he missed the most were the smells of the game.  The smell of the clubhouse, the smell of the outfield, and the smell of the glove when you put your face in it. Or Carlos May who had a thumb blown off while serving the the Marine Reserves before he even played major league baseball.  These guys truly loved the game.

And I also loved the stories about the game.  Some of them may have been exaggerated, but don't we all do that as we grow older?  Stories like "Cave"  Kusnyer wanting Ricky Henderson to sign his bat, or when Ron Kittle rode his Harley from West Lafayette, to Merriville, Indiana...NAKED, and getting stopped by a cop along the way.  Great stories...and that's also what baseball is all about.

After the banquet, back to the room to pack for our departure tomorrow.  I certainly had a good time and thank Skip for asking me.  With any luck at all, we'd be home tomorrow.
