Woke up pretty late as well today...on the road by 9:30, all clean and teeth brushed!

I knew where I was going a week ago.  You see Waterloo, Iowa is only about an hour from a town called Dyersville, Iowa.  You may recall from my original intro blog, Dyersville is the home of the "Field of Dreams" movie site.  If you missed that part, here it is again...

I liked Field of Dreams so much, the year it came out (1989), I made it part of our summer vacation to stop in Dyersville, Iowa where it was filmed. If you've never been there, you've got to go. I'll never forget that first year (we've been three other times!). Bryan was 9 years old, and we saw the movie while on vacation. When we got to the field, the owner of the biggest part of the field (it was owned by two different farmers...one of which had plowed his left field part back into corn), Don Lansing still had the bleachers, the backstop, and most of the diamond in tact. The lights were not. He said they were rented as props for the movie. We talked a while and he went over and grabbed a ball and a couple of gloves and played catch with Bryan. And all he had was a little coffee can with the words, "Keep the dream alive" written on it. I gave him a few bucks for the effort. When we came back a couple years later, he had a full trailer of memorabilia for sale, the guy in left field had his own stand and had turned the field back into a ball diamond again. And the lights were back up. I had heard that on every 3rd Sunday they had people dressed up in old time uniforms and come out of the corn for an exhibition game. How cool is that? Recently I heard the Lansing family was selling the property...asking price $5.4 Million..."If you build it, they will come!"

Back to today...The place is about 2.5 miles northeast of Dyersville.  Only one other car in the lot when I drove up...it had been sprinkling rain all morning.  Nice lady in the souvenir stand and I talked.  And I found out the owner bought out the guy in left field, so his shop was no longer open.  I took a few pictures, bought a golf ball and a baseball (for Kevin), and was on my way.

I knew when I took the exit to Dyersville where I was going to have lunch today.  After my visit to Field of Dreams, I ate a Quiznos.  What, you say?  Nothing special about Quiznos.  No, there isn't except those folks in Bloomington/Normal know the only two Quiznos in town closed a few months ago, and I have been going through withdrawl ever since.  You realize they are the franchise that made Blimpies and Subway start toasting their sandwiches don't you?  Well, they are.  And their Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich is pretty awesome...that and some Jalopeno chips and Diet and I'm in heaven.

Anyway, ate there and headed back on the road.  With any luck at all, I'd be home by 4:00 pm.  Made by 3:45.  It was a good trip.  During this trip, I drove more than 1150 miles, saw three great ballparks, ate and drank at some awesome eating and drinking establishments, played golf, renewed another Preview Guide friendship, made a lot of new friends along the way, did a brewery tour and revisited The Field of Dreams.  And if you'll note, I have added pictures to my last three updates...some pretty good ones, so check 'em out!

Lots of good times, good baseball and great memories!  More in about a week when I head to Kansas City and St. Louis.
