In the High Tatras, the highest mountains in the Carpathians, and the sort of place to make you go all misty eyed and wonder how these bloody big mountains actually got here!
We made full use of Phil & Netty's tent once again, and camped at over 1,000 metres. The first night was lovely, but once the wind got up last night, it got a little chilly. So cold in fact that I lay there awake for a good few hours hoping that I wouldn't freeze to death. Camping is by far the cheapest option in a resort that is hight season in the summer because of fantastic hiking and high season in the winter because its a ski resort.
We stayed at Eurocon, sorry... Eurocamp, a place with high prices and lots of faciltities that were all closed. And the Slovakian Caravan club were staying there too, complete with satellite dishes and huge mobile homes that only slightly overshadowed our 2-man tent. But, like the Murphy's, we weren't bitter, and we went off to explore the closed restaurants. It was so busy in fact that the same woman was responsible for the bar, the coffee shop and the supermarket. We made her earn her Slovak Crowns by using all three in the one evening, as there really wasn't that much to do once the sun had gone down. Still, she was loopy and wished us 'Happy Way' whenever we left.
As for the mountains, we had a bit of a hike, but looked real amatuers without the ski poles, hiking boots and tight shorts. Instead, we just stuck to the same trails as everyone else, but just looked a bit cheaper and less professional. Maybe if I'd pulled my socks up to just below my knees it would have been more impressive? The views were sensational, lots of trees and craggy peaks and alpine scenery that you would see in an Outdoor/ Wilderness magazine, not that I have ever seen one.

Re: slovakian caravan club
we struggle on..... we're good like that - must have been the terrible upbringing!?
the scriptwriter is drunk most nights.... that's what the problem is!
