We left Laramie at 7.30am and I drove for about 2 hours, which was the first bit of real driving I had done. It was pretty easy, as the car is the same size as mine, so it was just a matter of making sure I stayed on the road. I was driving as we arrived in Gillette at just after midday and we were not sure exactly where we were as we took a different way in. We travelled up the road and spotted the Pokeys sign. As we turned into the car park, we saw a car reversing out and discovered it was Ric. He spotted us and immediately realised who it was and pulled over. We both got out of the car and were both given massive hugs.

We chatted for a while and had some lunch while Ric went to check on a few things with his new venture, a Steakhouse/Nightclub called Boot Hill. He came back and chatted some more and then we went and checked into our hotel, had a bit of a rest and then went back to Pokeys for dinner. Jen (Ric's daughter) joined us for dinner, and was really nice to see her as well.

Before it got dark, Ric took us up to check out Boot Hill. Wow, this place is huge. It is going to be some place when it is finished. We were hoping it would be open while we were here, but it looks like it won’t be until the end of August. Oh well, we will just have to come back!

We went back to Pokeys and Ric had a couple of drinks with us before leaving to take care of his dogs at home. We stayed and were really looked after by Rachel, the bar manager. We also got talking to a few young people and this was interesting as we talked about the education system and apprenticeships etc. Things are so different over here. One of the guys wanted to get a job in the mines in Australia and had done some research, so he had lots of questions, some of which we could not answer. We left at 11.30pm and I drove back to our hotel. It is nice to know that we don’t have to pack up and leave in the morning, as we are here for 3 days.

Today, we did our own thing and went out to see Devils Tower, which is near Sundance. It took us about 50 minutes to get there and as we drove into the park, we spotted a field of praire dogs. I took a photo of one which was on our side of the road. We decided to stop on the other side of the road on our way back out of the park.

We drove to the car park and got out and did the 1.3 mile trek around the bottom of Devils Tower. It was a bit hard for Darryl as he has a head cold and not feeling too well, but we just took our time. Some technical info for you –

-          Over millions of years, erosion of the sedimentary rock exposed Devils Tower

-          The tower rises 867 feet from its base, stands 1,267 feet above the river and 5,112 feet above sea level

-          The area of its teardrop-shaped top is 1.5 acres

-          The diameter of its base if 1,000 feet

We got back into the car and then headed for Sundance to have lunch and then I drove back into Gillette. I think I am getting better driving on the wrong side of the road, as was staying in the lines fairly well.

We are just now having a bit of a rest before we go to dinner. It is storming here at the moment, so I am more than happy to stay inside.

Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day, we are, as Ric puts it, "going to shoot some shit up".
