One Sunday after meeting I was out in service with the only elder in our congregation, Juan Barerra, Meredith, Olympia, Pedro and Edward. All 6 of us crammed into Juan's tiny Toyota. That seems crazy and unsafe doesn't it? It was a big shocker to me too, but now its totally normal. I haven't worn a seat belt in weeks, and as long as there is lap space you can fit as many people into a four seater car as you want. Its awesome! As the time in service went on, it seemed like we were just checking up on some of Juan's Bible studies and return visits. In my na´ve lil mind thats all we could do, Olympia, Pedro and Edward didn't have any studies or visits and since me and Meredith were new to the territory we didn't have anything to contribute either. I was right with my prediction for a while, until, after introducing me to a cute lil old deaf lay, Juan handed me the “Listen to God” brochure, waved “see ya later” and walked out the door. A rush of panic swept over me and I found that I could do nothing but stand there smiling at the lil lady, Meredith and Olympia, who were all looking up at me wondering what in the heck they should be doing. In an instant I was running after Juan (who was by now half way to his car). When he saw me he outright laughed at me. Yes, laughed! Ignoring my flustered embarrassment I blurted out in fragments of spanish and sign language the many questions that I had. Where is she at in the brochure? Has she studied before? What do I do? Why me??? The only part of his response that I could understand was “go back in the house, she will tell you where she is at.” So I turned on my heal and went. Praying, praying, praying for all the holy spirit necessary to get me through the study.
It actually went really well! The Deaf woman showed me where she wanted to study in the brochure and we went over the pictures together, me explaining everything to her in sign language, asking a question, and then her explaining it back. I couldnt figure out what her name was, I introduced myself several times, but when I asked her what her name was she just shook her head. There wasn't anyone else in the house that I could ask so I chalked it up to her not knowing what her name was, which just made me really sad. That sweet lady was so happy to study, she kept hugging me and smiling from ear to ear, and I could really tell that she was understanding what I was trying to teach her. It was so amazing! A few days later Juan told me that the study was officially mine! I could go back and study with her the next week. I was so happy! First bible study in Panamahahaaa!
