Yonay Olive Farm

November 20 -- This was the same day we visited Sepphoris and I was not feeling well, thanks to a 24-hour bug.  I think I mostly dozed during the informational lecture by the owner of the olive farm.  I should have Tom write this blog entry, but oh well . . . .

Ehud Yonay spent many years working as a journalist for a magazine in California in which he wrote an article about the Navy fighter pilots.  His story was the basis for the movie, "Top Gun".  He wrote a history of the Israeli Air Force entitled, "No Margin for Error" which Tom just received in the mail today (12-16-11).  He told the group the story of how his family came to Israel, before there was a state of Israel, and formed a communal olive farm.  He also talked of his experiences with the Israeli military.  Before lunch, the group learned to make pita bread under the tutelage of Ehud's wife Shoshona.

Zefat

This ancient town has become a colony of Jewish artists with many shops showing off their beautiful creations.  We saw Menorahs that were so unique and beautiful I was tempted to purchase one, even as a Christian.  But, I was holding out for my special gift to myself when we reached Bethlehem!  More to come on that purchase.  Not only did we visit the artist colony, but we visited a synagogue and learned about Kabbalah, the mystical side to Judaism.
