I awoke this morning to the news that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office advised British tourists not to travel to Thailand as the trouble intensifies.

I sat on the edge of my seat glued to the news footage of military police and activists facing off on a highway in the outskirts of the city as the authorities attempted to stop the Red Shirts expanding their demonstrations.  Images of hundreds of armed soldiers and riot police equitted with tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition attempt to stop a convoy of up to 2,000 protesters on pick-up trucks and on motorcycles. The main highway was at a standstill, completely gridlocked with a sea of red shirt protesters.

According to reports, least 26 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 wounded since demonstrations began in mid-March and the situation does not seem to be getting any better.

Tourists have been advised to stay indoors and monitor the media as "violence could break out without warning".

In view of this, we have decided that it would be madness (and pointless) to visit Bangkok during this time of unrest and our safety has to come first.  So we have made the sensible decision to get a connecting flight from Bangkok to Phuket where the situation remains calm.

We are hoping that we may be able to pay Bangkok a visit once the situation has calmed down (if at all!)

We are scheduled to touch down in Bangkok at 15:35 on 4th May (Thailand time). After a marathon 17 hour flight, we will then face a bleary eyed 6 hour wait within Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi Airport for our connecting flight to Phuket.  We should arrive in Phuket at 22:40 on 4th May! So all in all 2 days will be spent travelling to our first destination!   By this time we will already feel (and look!) like seasoned travellers!

That pretty much brings us up to date for the timebeing and hopefully I havent bored you too much!

Dawnie x
