After a 02:30 bleary eyed border crossing and bag check, we arrived in Montevideo around 6 and headed straight to the Red Hostel for a quick snooze! Quite a funky little place with free internet so we were happy! The whole place had a really nice feel to it from the pretty Plaza Cagancha and the big Plaza Independencia with its huge Palacio Salvo...the Lonely Planet describes the palace as a ´bulging art deco spaceship´ which isn´t far from the truth! Alot of the city´s buildings are quite run down though and even in the main square, the Mausaleo de Artagus (a big statue) is offset by a crumbling apartment building!!! We then headed down to the seafront and the amazing ´Mercardo del Puerto´ which is basically a huge building full of bars where they are grilling meats on logs while you wait! I know alot of our highlights tend to sway towards eating but this place was unbelievable...we just sat at the bar drinking beer while the staff served us unbelievable cuts of meat and seafood! Mmmmmm! Needless to say we had lots of cheesy photos taken with the chefs and left there feeling pleasantly full! We then headed through the old town which is definitely the poorer side of town...watched the local kids playing footy for abit and then headed down La Rambla watching the locals fishing, spotting lots of fish jumping out of the sea and ended up sitting at Montevideo´s main beach for a while watching the world go by! We had a lazy evening in the hostel with a nice bottle of Uruguayan rose and watched Meet the Fockers and that was your lot really!
