The typhoon came in yesterday afternoon, closed train routes and roadways, but awakened to sunshine today.
Before the rains came, I enjoyed time in Hibiya Park. I watched some tennis on the public courts that were artificial grass with a light layer of sand. One court had 2 teenagers drilling each other, another had two women with obvious osteoporosis playing a half court gentle game with an equally elderly gentleman. Four middle aged men played a competitive game of doubles. On 2 nearby benches were 4 high school students eating lunch. One had a bento box with a rice ball and raw vegetables eating with fingers, another had a bowl and chopsticks,
the third had a Chinese dumpling, and the last was eating spaghetti with a fork.
Today I took the suijo bus (water bus) under 12 very colorfully painted bridges up the Sumida-gawa to Asakusa a very old neighborhood of Tokyo, but now home to the new Skytree Tower. Tokyo Tower used to be the Eiffel Tower of Tokyo, but last month Skytree took over the reign as the tallest tower in the world at 2080 feet. From it's opening May 22 until July 11 only people with reservations can go to the top of the broadcasting/observation tower. Reservations can be made on line, but you have to have a Japan issued credit card, so going to the top will have to wait for another visit. The bottom few stories of the tower are filled with shops, two floors are called "Japanese Experience" and are filled with Japanese restaurants. Everyone had a long line outside at 1:30 p.m.
The rain is expected to return tomorrow. It won't matter to most of the women, they have their umbrellas whether the sun shines or it rains. I've seen a few made with reflective fabric on the outside and beautiful designs on the inside. Even in the rain it is too hot and humid for a rain coat.
