Phnom penh

We got into phnom penh in the afternoon and didn't get accommodation until late evening! We had booked a place to stay on the awesome Mekong delta trip but the woman who took our booking forgot to inform the guesthouse we where staying at. We got there and there was no room for us anywhere because everyone stays on the main street beside the river! We eventually booked into this dorm for about $6 with these 2 German girls we had met on the bus. The dorm rooms where strange, the beds where separated by curtains and there where flowers everywhere. Was kinda cool but pretty strange! That night we went out for dinner along by the river but every place was soo expensive! Main courses cost about $6-$8 so we went and found some street food for about $1.50 and it was really nice! The nightlife was lacking. A few bars but nothing exciting! The next day we met up with Dionnes tuk tuk driver from 5 years ago (sunny) he was awesome! So friendly and funny. He picked us up and took us for breakfast (KFC) and then he convinced us that the best way to start a day is shooting coconuts with a very powerful gun :) we got to this military like base and where handed menu's and to our suprise it was just a menu filled with ammunition and guns! Jamie had a rueger 22 for an appetiser and   David had a shotgun for a main course! Was soo much fun! Got a couple of good videos of it. After that we went to the killing fields which was abit strange after have just been shooting guns for an hour! The killing fields where abit out of town. When we got there we where given headphones and audio with options for us to listen to at every stop of the fields! This was alot better than having a guide! The killing fields where concentration camps for when  Paul pot was in power of the khmer rouge in Cambodia. He basically killed any1 who wasn't 'pure' whatever that was in not sure! Hundreds of thousands where killed here and as you heard the audio being played you could start to feel the atmosphere change around the area! You got to hear survivors stories and guards confessions on the audio aswell. We got in Sunny's tuk tuk and went to the the s1 prison where they kept prisoners of war and tortured them. This place was just as horrible as the killing fields with all the buildings, beds, flooring and cells all untouched! There was photographs of every prisoner on all the walls of the prison and what happened to them! This was a contrasting day with us shooting guns and having a great laugh to us going to the killing fields and the prison where there were signs telling you not to smile! All in all we enjoyed the capital! I would recommend people to visit the places we did!

Hi David & Jamie,
Just wanted to wish you both a very happy Christmas from us all. Am loving your travel blog and reading about all the places you visit. We all miss you being here for Christmas but that's probably just jealousy because we want to be where you are. Have fun both of you and keep posting your photos.
Lots of love Pat, Peter, Kate, Morven & Bethan xxxxx
