We checked out of the John Dougherty house at 9:30 am, and drove south down Highway 1 - the Shoreline Highway, as it's called N of San Francisco - down a magnificent coastline where the cliffs butt the ocean for mile upon mile. There was hardly any traffic - partly due to the time of year, I expect, and also the fact that it's so far north of San Francisco. We stopped briefly at Point Arena lighthouse, but didn't climb it because I am a wuss about heights: the sweep of the bays was fantastic.

The Shoreline Highway is such a superb road that we were twice held up briefly for movie crews as they shot scenes along the way.

By lunchtime we had reached Bodega Bay, where Hitchcock filmed 'The Birds', where we had a wonderful seafood lunch, and then drove down through more glorious coastal scenery to Sausalito, across the Golden Gate again and through SF in the rush-hour (with some trepidation, as tomorrow the Olympic torch is due for its little outing here).

We arrived at the Tickle Pink Inn, Carmel Highlands, (highly recommended on Tripadvisor) at 6:30pm, and checked into our wonderful suite (see pictures - it's fab), with a splendid view of the sea. Complimentary champagne was delivered to our room, which we drank whilst watching the sunset over Monterey Bay - this is the life!! We`have a resident seagull christened Sam by previous occupants - quite friendly.
