Kara and I went for a run this morning. We do this sometimes before we have to go to work, if we're feeling overly energetic and well slept. We left the house at 6:27 am and jogged off down the street. Our route takes us down the highway (on a sidewalk, don't worry Mom), past the retirement home to the lighthouse on the coast, back across the beach to the pier then doubling back through town.

This morning, before we'd even got to the retirement home, actually before we even made it 100 metres from our home, we heard something behind us, so we both turned and there was a kangaroo hopping up right beside us. I let out a bit of a scream (well, more of a manly yelp, truth be told) and the 'roo hopped back across the street into the brush from whence it came. He was a little shorter than us, so kind of small for a kangaroo around these parts. I let out the startled yelp because I didn't expect to see a creature almost my size so close to us, he was only about 6 feet away. He was so cute though that we just laughed about the whole thing and kept running, completing our normal route.

Then, this afternoon, I googled 'jogging and kangaroos in australia', figuring I'd find some cute stories about kangaroos hopping alongside joggers in a very friendly and cute manner. Instead I found these stories;

We'll never know that kangaroo's true intentions. Whether my terrified scream scared a cute little critter who just wanted to run with us or whether my manly yelp proved to the creature that we were not to be trifled with. Either way, I'll be keeping an eye out on our next run, and perhaps I'll bring along a baseball bat just in case.
