A few hours ago Kara went into the kitchen and noticed a spider hanging from a web above the stove at about eye level. She yelled from the kitchen 'That is one nasty looking spider!' to me and so we captured it in a jar. I was going to kill it, but then I thought 'Well, we're in Australia, and we've seen a few spiders around and they're mostly harmless, so I'll just let it go outside.' It was a black spider about the size and shape of a pea, with long jointed legs and a red mark on it's back. I let it go outside and then we went for dinner to a friends place. We told our friend the story and she said 'Oh, that's a redback spider, you should kill those on sight! Very poisonous; not deadly but very painful bites' to which we replied 'Shit'.

Here's a picture of one we found on the internet. I checked outside when we got home from dinner to see if the spider was still around but she had already disappeared. She's out there as we speak, planning her revenge.

When we came inside, there was another, smaller spider hanging above the stove in the same spot so we captured him in a yogurt container. We believe it is her husband, and if either of us gets bitten in the night, we're going to kill him and leave his body on a toothpick on the counter as a lesson to her not to mess with us. Which would probably be ok with him because the females eat the males anyway.

Oh God, oh God I hope there isn't a nest of these bastards in our house.

Update; There is a country song by Slim Newton called 'Redback on the Toilet Seat'....

Holy crap you guys! So it''s all true then that Aus has a higher percentage of critters that'll kill ya than elsewhere? Hope she got the hint and decides to move elsewhere!
