We've been staying in Medicine Hat at Kara's parents place, more specifically in Dunmore but close enough. If Medicine Hat is known as 'The Gas City', Dunmore would be known as 'The Still Somewhat Gassy but Mostly Fumes' city. Seeing as the Hat got it's nickname from the natural gas reserves it sits on (Rudyard Kipling immortalized it as having 'all Hell for a basement'), I assume Dunmore sits on the same natural gas, so it could actually be called 'The Gas City's Neighbour' or 'The Gas Suburbs', or "The "See That Gas Over There, We Got That Here Too!" City'.

Annnnnnnnyway, we've been having a lot of fun here with Rex and Mo, very relaxing and fun hanging out with them. Kara and I both got our eyes checked today by Dr. Alan MacKenzie, Kara's uncle. He's a nice fellow and helped explain to me why my eyes got a bit of a yellowish tinge when I wore my contacts so much so many years ago. Gross eh? I bet you tuned in to our blog today to read exciting travel stories and about new cultural experiences and instead I've spent a good portion of your valuable time coming up with nicknames for Dunmore, Alberta and talking about my yellowish tinged eyes. I hope you're enjoying yourselves!

We've engaged in a crib tournament, that started out as one game, then became best 2 out of 3, and now I think we're going for 3 out of 5. You see, the games are quite short when playing with 4 people, about half as long as when you play with two people and Mo has been enjoying the fact that Rex is playing with us; he doesn't normally play crib when others engage in the game. Also, these games have given Mo an excuse to put off her marking, so the tournament keeps getting lengthened. Kara and I are ahead right now, winning 2 out of the 3 games. Either way, whether we ultimately win or lose, it's been fun playing cards with these guys and drinking wine. We'll keep you posted on who the ultimate winner of the tournament.

Kara and I have also been completing the loose ends of our Visa applications and other things that pop up. We finally got travel insurance; man those things are tricky to navigate. Kara has travel insurance through 3 providers already (credit cards and whatnot) but they don't cover her for the time we'll be gone or for the stuff we may need, so we had to search elsewhere. It turns out it's also really tricky to get coverage for more than 183 consecutive days, but we finally found a plan and subscribed to it. We also got international driver's permits, so watch out world. We're a comin'! We mailed a few things off, spent some time at the Medicine Hat Mall and bought some clothes at Mark's Work Wearhouse, some pretty good sales on there.

In all, a pleasant, productive and relaxing stay in 'The Gas Suburbs'. Now we're off to go camping with Laura, Duncan, Jesse and Stacey at the North Ghost campground NW of Calgary. I hope we don't see any ghosts!

Or bears!

Or ghost bears!

Updated: Kara and I lost the crib tournament, Rex and Mo are the reigning champions in their household, so far as I can tell.

Updated again: Actually I do hope we see a ghost bear. That would lead to a pretty exciting installment of "Dave & Kara, ramblin'".
