Friday, October 5, 2012

An early start to beat the forecast worsening weather, meant an up before sunrise and airborne for a 600 mile cross country west, across another couple of states. A slight dogleg to miss the permanent Restricted military area West of Columbus and then direct at 10,500ft to KPWA ( Wiley Post) Oklahoma City.

4 hours 20 minutes later, after beating to windward with a 20 kt headwind,  I descended through a cloud layer to break out at 1200ft for a visual approach into another new airfield.
I,ve now become younger by another hour as I passed another time zone. The first thing I ask after landing (after where,s the toilet ?)  is what time is it?
Refueled and tied down, all within 15minutes.
The USA have a radio call sign, "Uni com", which seems exclusive to them, which is for the use of the refueling contractor, which a landing aircraft calls and arranges fuel parking etc, as you are taxing in!
I enjoyed a very good dinner at the Skirvin Hilton, with a relaxing glass (or was it two ?) of quality Chianti,  an hour or so to upgrade  these notes, and off to bed for a well earned rest. Tomorrow I shall explore a new city.  I,ll let you know how I get on.

Hi Dave,
Just a quick note to say that I am enjoying keeping up to date with your epic trip. Sounds like you are having a great time. Take care and keep up the great pics. If you fancy a "slight" detour pop in and see us in Christchurch NZ, it would be good to see you again.

Hi Dave,
I see you are now more than a quarter of the way around the world (based on your longitude).
SPOT appears to be working well.
Enjoy Oklahoma.

Hi Dave (or should I say Peter Pan) this getting younger by the hour as you travel westwards is becoming somewhat of a delusion David, I suspect the continual changes in time are taking its toll on your ageing body.
Seriously I am glad things are going well and you have met some interesting folk over there and been to some interesting places I am green with envy.
I am away for a few days now but hopefully I can pick up when I get back from boring Spain. Incidently where is you next leg maybe New Mexico or is it a sharp right for LA ?

Take care and stay safe

Unicom is a very common radio link in Canada too. It gives you a freq. that you can call small airports on and get a human voice....most times!
