Where I stayed
Ah Zagreb! The capital of Croatia is a booming and lively city. I arrived on a Thursday night to great atmosphere, great hostel staff and great food at an acceptable price. I strolled the city the following day, beat the heat with a big helping of ice cream for only a dollar, and cruised the shops, eateries, markets, cathedral and side streets. The city is beautiful and has lots to do
I was lucky enough to make my stop in Zagreb during their folklore festival and took advantage. I saw two shows for free and saw performers from various parts of Croatia, Bosnia, Russia, and some amazing dancers from Bulgaria. Dancing to irregular meters that most westerners wouldn`t dare to, they put me in my place...no tap shoes for me.
Walking out of the theatre-like square I was stopped by the sounds of a Balkan Brass Band playing noisily in the middle of the streets. Amazingly, cars couldn`t pass. They were parked waiting for the band to finish entertaining the people outside dancing and singing along. I don`t see the drivers being happy about that, but I definitely was. Wish we could have things like that in Vancouver. The feeling was like when we had the Olympics. Such wonderful atmosphere.
Everywhere I go in Europe there seems to be some outdoor place where locals commune to drink and have a good time. All the major cities I have been to have it. And it doesn`t matter what day of the week it is, it`s always a party.
