I arrived with my family on Thursday in Amsterdam and the lack of sleep on the airplane made for a very tiresome first day abroad.  Not much sleep, in fact, no sleep at all on the nine hour flight.  Our first day in the city was simple, we had an enjoyable dutch dinner and then it was off to bed.  Friday was the first day of sightseeing, running around and fun.  We took a tour to the countryside north of Amsterdam to visit a traditional cheese factory and farm, a wooden clog making factory and a diamond manufacturer.  We also had a great feast that night at an authentic Indonesian restaurant my Let's Go Guidebook suggestion.  No English on the menu made the affair a little troubling, however, the staff were really good about it and helped us out.  We filled our bellies and from then-on it was time to experience the nightlife of the Dutch capital - we need not discuss what happened next.

This morning, after a hearty breakfast we met with my cousin, Pam, and her boyfriend for a canal tour.  Amsterdam has a lot of canals.  They are everywhere!  In fact, one might say that Amsterdam IS canals.  Elsewhere, if you aren't enjoying the city's view from a boat, you'd better be on a bike, since that seems to be the way to get around.  Wish we could get that happening in Vancouver.  People are nice, the weather has worked in our favour and although I've been really tired these first couple of days, it's been an enjoyable experience.

This afternoon we went to the Anne Frank House.  Definitely a genuine tour.  The whole place has been renovated and fixed up, but they have left many of the artifacts that make the tour.  Magazine pages and photos line the secret annex where Anne and her family hid for years during the war  There are also markings on the wall of how the kids have grown over time, just like at my own house.  Anyways, perhaps we'll head to the Ice Bar tonight after the Torture museum and have a few drinks.  Only a few more days before we head off to Krakow, Poland and then meet family in Warsaw!
