The laid back town of Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, is a top destination for surfers and adventure seekers.

The hotels were all packed to the rafters with travellers and holiday makers looking for a piece of the New Year action. The weather was crazily wet - so much so that the noise on the roof of our cabin was too loud to sleep on a couple of nights - but the town was a great place to chill out for a few days, eat good food and drink yummy cocktails to bring in the New Year.

We stayed in a huge cabin at Casa Verde Lodge with a beautiful swimming pool in the surrounding tropical gardens. The cabin even had it's own kitchen and TV, so David managed to get Frosties for breakfast while watching BBC World and listening to the rain (just like being back home).

David rented a surf board and managed to give himself the biggest bruise that I have ever seen (check out the photo of it - it's truly impressive). I think I'll stick with diving!

We hooked up with Laura and Jarkko, some friends we had met in the Bay Islands, for steak, rum and Salsa on New Year's Eve and then went on a canopy tour together once the hangover had subsided.
