We were both very excited about our trip to Arenal to see one of the ten most active volcanos in the world. We booked into a swanky lava view room for two nights with dreams of sipping cocktails on our balcony watching the 'huge ash columns, explosions and glowing red lava'....

OK...now for the reality...

We arrived in Arenal at 8pm after a very wet seven hour journey from Tortugero feeling tired and emotionally drained due to the sheer incompetence of the tour operators that organised the trip. The rain and cloud cover was so strong that we couldn't even see that there was a volcano...and the weather stayed like this for the next two days until we left.

Now for the bright side....

We spent two whole days drinking cocktails in the swim up wet bar in the hot springs at our hotel and putting the world to rights with our new Columbian friend, Andrea. When we fancied a change from our hotel, the three of us headed down to the drop dead gorgeous Tabacon hot spring resort down the road for an evening of pure indulgence. The resort is comprised of thermo-mineral rivers, running at a temperature range of 27C to 42C flowing through exotic gardens, forming natural waterfalls and river pools. If you are ever in Costa Rica you simply MUST go to this place.

Who wants to see a volcano anyway!
