Christmas in Caye Caulker was mainly spent getting wet! We got up at 5am on Christmas day to go diving in the Blue Hole and it was p*ssing down with rain. Luckily it cleared up by the time we arrived at the dive site. As we descended from the surface, the temperature sharply dropped and all we could see below us was dark blue nothingness. Once we reached 40 metres we were confronted with the most dramatic stalagtite formations and we descended another 5 metres to swim through these. The temptation to just go a few metres further down was very hard to fight! After spending a few minutes down in the deep we gradually ascended to more shallow waters where we were circled by 7ft reef sharks before ascending to safety stop level with some friendly groupers.
We dived at two more dive sites on Christmas day in crystal clear water and had lunch on Half Moon Caye - a nature reserve and nesting site for a variety of birds. Although it didn't really feel like Christmas day - with the 30 degree heat, absence of family and lack of 'The Snowman' on TV - we had a fantastic time and David still managed to get something resembling Christmas dinner (but critically without roast potatoes!).
The rest of our time on Caye Caulker was also mainly spent diving in various other sites around the area, including Hol Chan where we hired a digital camera and had some very close encounters with nurse sharks and large groupers (check out the photos above).
