Took the train down from Colombo, 200kms and one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world, traveling right next to the Indian Ocean, cost, just less than 1 pound!
There were some drawbacks though, approximately twice as many passengers as seats but finally got one after the first two hours and sat in relative comfort the rest of the way. This was the railway washed away by the tsunami with 1500 passengers killed but fortunately I survived.
Galle is on teh very southern tip of the island with a fresh breeze blowing all day. It is a very old port, the primary Sri Lankan port for hundreds of years and I am staying inside the walled fort that is the old town. Forty foot high ramparts rise straight out of the water and the local boys dive off the top (when paid by the tourists), timing their dive to coincide with a wave. That was quite impressive but even more so was the speed that they just climbed straight back up the walls, barefoot and totally fearless.
Galle is also one of Sri Lanka's international cricket grounds, it has been rebuilt since the tsunami and will be a venue in the World Cup in February. There was a match going on as I walked past the ground and I attempted to convince some German boys that it was really quite interesting...I think I failed.
I had trouble sleeping last night due to severe irritation on my hands and asked the owner of my guest house where I could find a pharmacy for some cream. Turns out his son in law is a doctor, having dinner with him round the corner and he has diagnosed scabies!!! What?! Apparently it is very common and contracted by skin contact. He advises me to carry a sanitiser and clean my hands after anybody shakes my hand...which strangers do all the time. A bit scary but I guess all part of the experience. Katherine take note.
Have some graet photos but my card reader (free form Jessops) has stopped working and no cafe here has one. Will upload when I can.

Thanks for the hint, I have been disinfecting after toilet duties and before meals but not after shaking hands. Not sure it will go down too well though. But I've just got to say he he he you've got scabies!
