So it's the end of our first chapter in South America. The next continent on the cards is Asia. We booked all of our flights before we set off travelling (apart from the return flight, which I now can confirm is the 18th of September) and because we're doing such a weird route we found that there were no direct flights from South America to Asia. So we had the choice of flying via Australia or the U.S.A.  We decided on New York. Apart from Ed, none of us had been to New York before, and it had always been a city on my list to visit. I wouldn't mind seeing Australia too but it would require a lot more time and money. We only chose to stay for 4 days as we knew it would eat at our budget. We immediately realized this when we tried to book a hostel, we couldn't find anything cheaper then $35/night which may sound cheap but compare it to the $5/night we paying in S. America!

So we checked in at a Best Western, America's equivalent to our Travel Lodge, as it was the cheapest place we could find. The flight over was a very bumpy ride, so we didn't get much sleep, and as soon as we got to our hotel we crashed out. Later on that evening we forced our selves out of bed as we had previously booked tickets to a night club down town in Manhattan. The music played in most S. American clubs was pretty awful so we had been looking forward to this for ages. The club was in an amazing setting, high up on an open terrace, right in the middle of the city, with lots of sky scrapers surrounding it. There was a good DJ playing there too called Matthew Dear, who has played in some of the best underground clubs in the world such as DC10, Ibiza. The music was amazing and the people were very friendly. The only down side were the prices of the drinks, but it was kind of what we were expecting. All in all it was a great night, and most important of all we got our clubbing fix!

The next day we went for a walk around the city.  We visited Gran Central Station, then hopped on the subway to Ground Zero where the twin towers used to stand, before the tragic incidence of 9/11. There wasn't much to see as building works have already started for the new towers. It was quite daunting, seeing how much of a big space they used to take up. There were memorials on the walls listing all the people who died on the day. Very sad.
We then walked through Wall Street and onto the Staten Island Ferry where we got to see a good view of all Manhattan and the Statue of liberty from a distance
In the evening we went to a comedy club, which was fun but I must say, the Americans can't beat the Brits when it comes to comedy!

We woke up earlyish the next morning as we wanted to beat the queues to go up the Empire State Building. It was a bit cloudy at the top but none the less we were presented with amazing views of the city (see photos). Afterwards, we went for a traditional American breakfast at the Tick Tock Diner. The portions of food in America are unbelievable. Even I couldn't finish them! We then walked through Chelsea, Greenwhich Village, Soho, China Town and Little Italy. We went for dinner at a Taco Bell which is a Mexican fast food chain, where we met some local New Yorkers. They all  had skateboards and rode BMX bikes, just like all the kids in the "movies". One of them was running a night at a club near by, which we got invited to. The music wasn't our cup of tea but with enough free shots down us, we manged to make do!

We spent our last day in New York with a bit of a hang over. So we headed to Central Park where we relaxed under the sun. When we felt a bit better we split off and went to do a bit of shopping down 5th Avenue. After shopping I sat in Times Square to take in the crazy advertising world that surrounded me. We rejoined in the evening to catch the flight that we had been dreading for ages, the flight to Hong Kong via Doha. The entire journey was to last 40 hours!
