Ok, so we're now in the South... After a couple of cold days (sorry Canada, cold here is about 10C overnight) in Trinidad de Cuba we took a long bus ride to Santiago. The cool weather followed us so we soon hopped another bus to the small town of Siboney, on the southern Caribbean coast, to soak our bones in the sun. For Cuban music fans, this is the hometown of Compay Segundo, of Buena Vista Social Club fame. Our casa was right on the ocean-- fabulous views and breezes, and 5 minutes to walk to the beach... first photo is from the casa.
In Siboney we felt the Haiti earthquake as a tremor, not having any idea what had actually happened until the next day. It's strange to think we were almost in sight of Haiti at the time...
Back to Santiago for a couple of days (including a quick unscripted salsa dancing lesson). Here's a lovely non-Cuban lady with her car.
The next hop-on was to Baracoa, where we are now. This area is exotic in several ways, but the most obvious is that the food is actually interesting (this is unique in Cuba), with coconut sauces and fascinating fruits. Here's yesterday's breakfast table: mamey (zapote) in the middle of the photo. It looks (& tastes) like a very ripe sweet potato, but it's a fruit. Dave can't get enough of it. Next maracuya on the lower right. It looks like a small grapefruit from the outside. Theresa loves it. The star fruit, called alberroa, is on the left.
There's a great (surprise!) beach just north of Baracoa. The jeep ride is bumpy to say the least, but the beach is gorgeous & worth it!
Best regards to all,
D&T

Good to hear from you. It sounds like you have been enjoying Cuba's south east. Our weather here has actually been quite good lately - for January...around the freezing mark but sunny for the most part. Ev enjoyed her lunch visit with us last Sunday, but she is getting noticeable weaker all the time. She gets tired lifting her fork I think.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES to you Theresa on Sunday. Where will you be then?
Hola amigos
Me alegro saber que estan bien. Nosotros estamos aqui en Vallarta donde el clima es fantastico. Sol y calor todos los dias. Estoy dando clases de espanol y tomando clases de historia como el ano pasado. Y tambien comiendo mucho! Que siguen bien los dos
