Monteverde and Santa Elena are two towns located in the middle of two cloud forest reserves. If you're into plants and birds (oh and maybe butterflies like our Pommie friends) this place is pretty much heaven. Platform Rainforest walks, Canopy tours, and a trip to the butterfly garden are just some of the many things that can be experienced here.
OK so we were a little lazy and just did the canopy tour which, as my mum will not be surprised to hear, I hated every minute of. It was three KM of cable, 18 platforms and one Tarzan swing long. Of course Dave jumped at the chance to try the Yarzan swing. I of course just observed and took pictures. We also had intentions of signing up for a night tour in the hope of seeing our first Sloth. However, instead of taking our money for the tour the owner at the Hostel took us to one up the road that was hanging in a tree. We were very lucky to see it at eye level as the next day it had ventured high into the trees.
New Years eve in Monteverde involved a huge party of chocolate, Big Bang Theory and sleep by 9pm! We are definitely starting to show our age.
