It was a busy day getting to Tamarindo. We splurged on a Taxi (to avoid two buses) to the border and then after around 1.5 hours getting through immigration, we had two buses to get to Tamarindo. It's safe to say that public transport in Costa Rica is a nightmare and traveling a short distance often results in backtracking, multiple buses and a whole lot of hours!
Playa Tamarindo was put on the map by the surfing movie The Endless Summer II, the town is totally geared towards tourists (mainly Americans) and ironically enough, it's the Americans that seem to complain the most about 'over development'. We however did not see it and suggested they check out the Gold Coast before commenting on over development.
Surfing is definitely the 'in thing' at Tamarindo, Dave had a surf (with a thousand learners) and we rented boards to take with us to Playa Grande, the next Northerly beach we are heading to next :-)
It was certainly a shock to the hip pocket coming to Costa Rica... Literally everything is more expensive, in some situations double to that of Nicaragua (I.E. Accommodation). Hopefully the budget won't cop too much of a beating.
