San Juan Del Sur... Where do we start!

San Juan is a small town located on the Pacific Ocean in Southern Nicaragua (around 45 minutes to the Costa Rican border). We took a private shuttle from Granada with a lovely Canadian/English couple we had met, this was far nice than traveling in the chicken bus. We hadn't booked any accommodation but managed to find literally the best place in town, Casa Ariki. The owners Baldo and Sarah (and their dog Shaka) were so welcoming and helpful, we instantly felt at home. So much so that two planned nights turned into ten! We literally had to drag ourselves out of the town in the end.

The first few days we hung out with Layne and Tanya who we had met in Granada. Luckily we all wanted to do the same things: surfing, fishing and eating lots of wonderful food. Unfortunately you cannot surf on the beach in town, but the local surf shops offer shuttle services to the surrounding beaches, Maderas, Ramonza and Hermosa. Dave surfed literally every day with Michelle an awesomely lovely Swiss girl we met. I can't believe how much he has improved!

I managed to get my PADI open water certification (half the price of what you pay in Australia) which will certainly come in handy later in our trip. Initially I had a bit of a freak out in the water, but after a pool session I managed to feel much more comfortable in completing the ocean dives.

All in all we can both safely say that San Juan has been our most favourite town. We definitely want to head back there some day.

Fun beach fact: About six months ago a taxi got robbed at gun point on it's way to Hermosa beach, so now a security guard with a rifle travels with you in the shuttle to the beach!
