My friend Rogerio hooked me up with a friend of his, Beto, in the beach town of Maresias.  It is a small town which becomes lively in the weekend with ppl from Sao Paulo.  They come here for the surf, the beach, the tranquility and one of the most famous clubs in Brazil, Serena.

My stay here is the classic travel story where someone is introduced to a friend of a friend, and the hospitality that is then shown is second to none.  I was given a room in Beto´s house and a set of keys before he had known me for 1 hour.  I was free to come and go as I pleased and there was no expectations on his part.  In fact, he wouldn´t even let me pay for his food when we would go out to eat.  Not only did he make me feel at home, but his dog Luna, a Rottweiler, also made me feel at home.  She reminded me so much of Khan in their temperments and their love of people.  Luna was a big teddy bear.  All she wanted to do was be petted, pretend she was a 90 pound lap dog and chase after her skateboard.

Beto´s friends were also extremely hospitable.  On Fri, Sat and Sun nights we all met for dinner at someone´s house for BBQ and drinks.  During the day on Sat and Sun, we all met at the beach and since they all surfed, I always had a free board to use.  Although their English was not as fluent as Beto´s or Michelle´s, it didn´t matter as the human spirit was alive and well within all of them.

It was really hard for me to leave because I had such an amazing experience here.  In my journey, this was the first time where someone I had never met opened their doors and entire house to me.  I have met many others who were very hospitable, but not to the level and extent I was shown by Beto.  I am truly grateful and lucky to have spent time in Maresias...
