Tuesday 08/09/09

Up and out of the motel at 8am and back on the road. General took the wheel and off we headed once again in search of Mount Rushmore.

Just before we hit South Dakota (SD – State 12) we stopped at Luverne for fuel fill up.

We then stopped at the Corn Palace, apparently the only corn palace in the world. Well, what can I say, other than it had a whole heap of corn on the outside, that is replaced every year. It was free admission, so we stopped off for a quick look and some photos. General wasn't too keen on the idea, so he stopped in the Dodge.

After this, I took control of the Dodge and we headed for Mount Rushmore. We stopped off at a scenic viewpoint, just because it seemed like a good idea, then the second I walked onto the grass, little crickets started jumping up everywhere, I thought this was quite cool so I started running in the grass, the girls thought it was less cool when they all started jumping though the open window into the car! Back in the car, and on a pretty empty road, i cranked the cruise control to 85 and off we went. Would you biffing believe it, in the arse end of nowhere and there was a copper hiding, I only spotted him just at the last second, so hit the brakes and cruised at 70 for the next mile, luckily I think he was in the middle of a double cinnamon topped doughnut so decided not to follow us.

Anyway, we got to Mount Rushmore at about half 5, $10 to park the car and then we all got out and walked over to it. It was kinda impressive, possibly a bit smaller than I imagined but still pretty cool to see. We took a whole heap of photos, and a few more when the General got creative and decided to get the other 4 of us to pose as the faces looked in the rock face, this got some giggles from other tourists there at the time. There were also some pretty cool little chipmunks running around, so I grabbed a few photos of Alvin, Simon and Theodore little guys too.

After this, we drove down the road to see the crazy horse. On arrival we were told it would be $27 to go in and see it, as Mount Rushmore was free and this still had a very long way to go until completion, we decided again this and se go a few photos and turned around.

We then decided to knock out some more miles so there would be less to do the following day. We had some absolutely amazing views over the next hundred or so miles. We finally stopped at the 'Covered Wagon’ motel in Lusk, Wyoming (WY – State 13)

We went to the Silver Dollar pub down the road for some steak and watched a bit more baseball, go Rockies! Then it was back to the motel and into bed.
