So, I woke up quite early and didn't really sleep so well.  While I was packing in Salzburg, I had ruptured my suitcase and on my way to Vienna it finally gave way with a torn zipper and broken wheels.  OOPs, dizzy me with too much stuff. Well my first order of buisness was to find a suitable replacement.  Fortunately, my hotel was located very near a massive supermarket and there was a sale on cheap baggage so i basically walked around the corner and picked up something on my credit card.  The bag is huge and you could fit a human in it but it was also quite cheap and i need it to get home.

Next up, to the train station to buy a ticket home.  There has been bad weather in London and also, I have some political issues with air travel at the moment. I became worried during my trip about being stuck in Heathrow on New years day.  I therefore decided to take an overnight train back to Rome from Vienna.  Unfortunately, there was a sell out for all trains on the 1st.  The train guy tried in vain to get me something but couldn't make it happen.  I thought about waiting until the 2nd or 3rd but on either day there was still nothing. Then, the light bulb went on!!  As I was turning to leave the counter, the gentleman stopped me and told me to wait as he got up and spoke to another operator.  When he came back to the counter, he cheerfully told me he did something special for me.  I really don't understand German and his english was sketchy so I wasn't exactly sure what he had sold me but for 115 euros i had a ride home so I was happy.  After I got back to the hotel, I cancelled my flights for a full refund and then proceeded to ask the nice girl at the hotel what the ticket said.  turns out I am booked on a first class overnight sleeper but NOT from Vienna.  I am actually going from a small town nearby.  The British Airways flight cancellation will cover the cost of the ticket and I will be home on the 2nd of January as planned.  travelling in style.

Next I went into the center of the city.  My hotel is located just up the street from the number 43 tram which ends directly in the center.  Unfortunately, it was super cold and I was super tired.  When I got out of the tram, I saw the on-off bus coming and decided to take the "big" tour for 3 hours which goes to all the central stops and also goes on an extended route beyond the center. This would give me a way to sit down and avoid the cold while also seeing the highlights of the city.  The city is NOT boring but I couldn't keep myself from nodding off.  Fortunately, I did manage to see the overall highlights and I have plenty of time in Vienna to go back.

After the tour, I took a small walk around the center slowly circling outward from the center most point but it was just too cold to really be out walking, perhaps because I was so tired but either way at about 2:30 I went back to my room for some rest.  Honestly, it's been a very long vacation for me and I have no qualms about relaxing during a long vacation.  I'm sure Vienna will still be here later.

later in the evening after some long relaxation time in my room, I went out for a drink in a nearby tavern and called it an early night.  As i searched for a place to have my cocktail,  I was aware of a very bustling night life that I will hope to explore in another night.
