In Europe, I am visiting a large number of different countries that speak different languages. Fortunately a lot of young Europeans speak quite competent English. Because of this they actually prefer to speak English with you, as it is the universal language and everyone gets very excited at the chance to practise with a native speaker (despite my accent). Therefore the only words you really need to know in some countries are 'Excuse me' and ‘do you speak English?’ But the locals always appreciate a bit of effort from your part to know the basics, as you are after all in their country. I’ve come up with a list of some essentials that I have to learn in the native tongue of whatever country I find myself in.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

-    Hey mate
-    Excuse me
-    Thank you very much
-    You have pretty eyes
-    I am so sorry
-    What is your name?
-    One beer please
-    Another beer please
-    Is that your girlfriend?
-    I don’t speak that language

But the no.1 essential, drinking cheers! (Cheers, Pröst, Salud, Na Zdravje, Skål, A votre santé, etc.) There are potentially many more, but when travelling to so many different countries, it can get a bit frustrating trying to learn the basic phrases of so many different languages. It’s hard to know what’s necessary and what isn’t in each different country, so here are a few phrases that aren’t exactly essential, but can be handy to know depending on what country you find yourself in.

HELPFUL PHRASES (SOMETIMES USED)

-    I don’t know that guy
-    Can I borrow your phone?
-    Can I stay at your place?
-    Watch out for that truck!
-    Please don’t shoot me!
-    I do not find you attractive
-    You are too drunk to go home with
-    Have you seen my pants?
-    My hovercraft is full of eels
-    Go away!

Have a look at a few more of the videos that I have been taking on my trip. I look forward to writing about my next destination.
