Sometimes travelling alone can get a bit lonely, but now
that I am used to the whole idea I wouldn’t have it any other way. I spent my
first night in Slovenia all alone because I couldn’t find a host or a good
hostel, but maybe I needed a bit of a break.

Thankfully though, Daša (pronounced Dasha) saved my ass the
next night. She was a very sweet girl and took me in even though she already
had people staying. Ljubljana was an incredible city and I was fortunate that I
was able to go out with her on my last night and meet some of her Slovenian friends,
as well as a cool American bloke that was also staying with her. The
night was soured just a little bit by a couple of sleazy Spanish blokes, but they
are impossible to avoid when I travel. Something I’ve had to learn to deal with
is competing with the sleaze, and the only country that tops the Spanish is the
Italians.

Moving on, I next went to Croatia. The place has some of the
most amazing coastline you will ever see, and I witnessed it on my way from
Rijeka to Zadar. Unfortunately I left my shoes at the hostel there. My feet
were killing me by the time I got to Zagreb. I had already booked a hostel for
Budapest because I was determined to be part of an epic pool party they had
going on, but at the same time I was tempted to go back for my shoes, which I
ended up doing a week later. By that stage my feet were in a pretty bad state.

Budapest was simply insane, in both a good and bad way. I
really got to experience the obnoxiousness of the drunken Aussie. In Budapest
there were Aussies everywhere, and I find it strange how a couple of really
good blokes can turn into dickheads when they are in a larger group and
intoxicated. That aside, there is always good blokes around when you make the
effort, and some of the people were fantastic. I started with an epic pool
party of over 2000 people on the first night. It was fun at first but things
got a bit messy towards the end when the event turned into a sex fest and people were wading through a pool full of
used condoms. On my last night in Budapest I was the king of karaoke night.

I’m a pretty humble guy (at least I used to be), but I was
pretty awesome. You need to pick a song that everyone knows so they can all go
nuts with you. Most people failed to do this, although special mentions go to a
couple who sang love shack and a girl who did The Killers – All these things
that I’ve done, which went off. But I had people climbing onto each other’s
shoulders. I reminded everyone of their high school days when I busted out
blink-182 – All the small things.

I decided to go back to Croatia for my shoes, and because I
could. But something happened on the train that made me very glad that I don’t
plan things in advance. When I travel by train I always walk up and down the
carriage and look for the cabin with the best looking girls. I have made some
good friends from doing this already, but on the way from Budapest back for
Zagreb I met London girls Lottie and Hannah, and they managed to considerably
change my earlier opinion of London. Right from the start we got along like a
house on fire, and they convinced me to join them on their night train from
Zagreb to Split.

On the night train I wasn’t allowed in their cabin, but I
went with them anyway to drink red wine. After we broke a table we caught the
attention of one of the guards, who couldn’t speak English. It was clear that
he was telling me to leave, but we deliberately chose not to understand him.
The night became a riot, as was the next night in Split.  So I didn’t find my shoes. But thanks to
Lottie and Hannah I am very glad I ended up returning to Croatia.

Next I am planning to go to Belgrade, which I’m told is the
party capital for Europe. The place will surely be off the hook.
