Port Hedland Golf Club
From Kununarra we spent a couple of days driving and eventually arrived in Fitzroy Crossing where we drove just out of town to see Geikie Gorge. We completed a 3km walk in boiling heat which took us along the gorge to the 'west wall'. From here we continued west towards Broome. The road from Kununarra to Broome ran along the edge of the Kimberley’s which we weren’t able to explore further as we don’t have a 4x4 vehicle but we passed through a lot of rocky terrain and there was stunning scenery on the horizon. It was a long journey though and we spent a few nights in basic rest areas which have very little facilities. What an adventure!!
We were happy to arrive in Broome where we checked into a caravan park near Cable Beach for a couple of days. It was good to have facilities again and a nice swimming pool! On the day that we arrived we went to Gantheaume Point at low tide where we were able to see 120 million year old dinosaur footprints in the rocks!
We spent the next day on Cable Beach relaxing and playing some frisbee. In the late afternoon we went on a camel ride along the beach. Our camel was called Luke and he was joined to ‘The Ghan’. The sun set as we were going along and the sky turned various shades of red. The camel ride was a touristy thing to do but we enjoyed it.
From Broome we had a two day drive to Port Hedland. Port Hedland is not a tourist town as it is very industrial (a real man’s town!). The only reason we had to stop there was to get Brucie serviced. Port Hedland is the largest port in Australia and huge amounts of iron ore are exported from there. We went to the dock and watched some iron ore being poured into a ship to be taken to Korea. We spent the night in the car park of the town’s golf club! Luxury!
