Hi y'all,

Been a lot happening in the last few days, finally left Lamu, which was a bit of a struggle and left for Malindi for a couple of days. Malindi is an 'Italian' resort on the coast, so it was a good place for ice cream, pizza and stuff but the beach was a bit disappointing after Lamu.

We then moved on to Mida Creek, a world heritage site due to having 8 different species of mangrove (apparently there are only 9 on the planet) in one place.

The Eco camp was a community scheme, where all profits go towards medical and school bills for the locals, it was also a nice place to relax as i had picked up a (man) cold and was feeling a bit sorry for myself.

We booked a tour type thing with two Belgian guys who were staying at the same place (hi Bruno/Thomas!!!!) to do a boardwalk through the mangroves and then a canoe trip before heading to Gede ruins in the afternoon.

The Mangroves were interesting and the guide showed us the different types of mangrove and how they differ, he also showed us how they spread and grew. The best thing for me though was the crabs which were everywhere. The boardwalk was fun although we didn't see much, it was worth the money to see Marit struggle across though!! The canoe trip was also nice as we got fairly close to so stork and a big flock of flamingos.

In the afternoon we headed to Gede ruins, a 12th century Swahili town complete with mosques, pillars and tombs. As it was abandoned the trees have started to overgrow the ruins and the monkeys have taken over the place. A bit of a scaled down, not so wow factor version of Ankor Wat.

The place was nice although we were all a bit knackered after a full day in the sun. The best thing for me was seeing 3 Verreaux's Eagle owls up in the trees. The Guide was a bit upset though that i was more interested in them than him telling me the history of the place.. never mind!

Going to Mombasa tomorrow, staying with Vic who i worked with at Our Ladys. Looking forward to a bit of luxury... a bed, a fridge, maybe even a TV......

Hey dave and Marit,

hope all is well. Say, sorry to bother, but Thoams asked if we couldn't eliminate our previous comment, as it has his full name in it, and he'd prefer not to leave many electronic footprints behind. Mind erasing the previous comment? Thanks so much!
