We arrived in Panama City after a million hour bus ride (I think I actually had cankles from having to sit for so long!) and headed straight for the old city "Casco Viejo". Casco Viejo is currently being restored to it's original state so the city is a mix of newly restored buildings and very cool looking abandoned buildings. While exploring the area, this truck drove by us spraying some mysterious substance out of it. I got out of the way but Dave was directly in the line of fire and he got blasted by the toxic smelling spray! The men driving the truck were laughing at him and the ladies across the street informed us that they were spraying for Dengue Fever! I think Dave is immune for life (and he may soon be growing a third eye).

The fist place we stayed at was this grand old hotel with beautiful tile floors and huge rooms called "Hotel Colon". You could tell that it used to be quite something back in the day, but time was not treating it well. We met a very strange and interesting science fiction author in the dark on the rooftop patio (if someone had of told me he had been a ghost I would have believed them) who told us that he stays there to gain inspiration from the ghosts of the previous dwellers of the hotel (insert famous authors whose names we can't remember). He also told us that we were across the street from Cafe Coca Cola which was famous for being a meeting ground for politicians and high government officials during the fifties and sixties like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Very interesting man, yet also spooky and smelling intensely of alcohol.

We moved hostels the next day to Luna Castle which was much more happening. It had a great view of the new city which is filled with empty sky scrapers. Apparently building sky scrapers is a great way to hide copious amounts of cocaine money...interesting.. At the hostel, we met a bunch of fun people and ventured out to Panama's club district which was very cool and modern and ended the night singing the song "Hips don't lie" by Shakira with 10 of our newest friends in a crowded Karaoke bar..haha. The next day we tested the ceviche at the local fish market (delicious) and awaited the arrival of our friends from Vancouver and Toronto! Lauren K, Shannon, Carey and Paul flew all the way out to join us for a quick 17 day trip from Panama to Colombia. It was great to see some familiar faces and to show them Panama city which we were really loving. With our peeps, we made the trip out to the Panama Canal, the old city and also out on the town to this area in Panama where they check your ID on the street and then let you into this whole block full of bars and clubs. Fun times!

After a really great time exploring Panama city, we were off to Carti, Panama to board our 38 foot Catamaran and meet our German captain for our 6 day sailing adventure to Cartagena, Colombia via the indigenous San Blas Islands.

Let the sailing adventure begin!
