60 or so miles east of mainland Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea lays the Corn Islands. After a 1.5 hour flight from the capital we had finally arrived. Next up was catching the boat taxi from Big Corn to Little corn. After a bumpy, wet and fairly overcrowded ride, we had arrived in paradise. We settled in to our hut/cabina on an amazing beach and started to slow down to island speed (slow). No cars, no roads, few bikes, just a few walking paths to get around. Maybe we weren't there long enough to suss out the negatives of the island, but we really didn’t find any. Super friendly nice people, cheap everything, fantastic food, unreal beaches, few tourists, really good rum, awesome snorkelling etc.

Highlights of our stay include...

Swimming with sharks for the first time. It went something like this... We jumped off the boat, I put on my mask, look down and below me was a *@$%ing shark! I lifted my head out of the water to inform Lauren who was putting on her mask, of the great news "Holy %$&*!! There is a shark right below us!" ..... Lauren replied “NO NO NONONONONO!!” After a little battle, I convinced her that Nurse Sharks don’t kill blonde girls. It was gone by the time she looked but we did manage to find four more during our time snorkelling. Lauren swam above them without screaming, until one moved towards us, she’s a big girl now.

Staying with Will and Mary in the plushest cabinas on the island. After two days at “Graces Cool Spot” we decided to splurge and move with Mary and Will up the beach to a two storey cabina. Old Sykes, being the master angler that he is, went fishing and came back with enough to feed our little family for a couple nights. The giant Mahi Mahi and Kingfish that his chassis pulled in, was then cooked above a fire on the beach and enjoyed by us for a couple nights. Cheers bud. We also enjoyed delicious freshly baked coconut bread that we picked up from a local ladies house every day at 2pm and had to try the local specialty of Ronton soup (coconut broth with plantains, vegetables, fish, shrimp and potatoes...very tasty!) One more thing, when you are chilling on the beach, every hour you are approached by a different local selling various homemade treats “Banana Bread, Chicken Pie, Banana Pie, Mango” of course we had to sample them all!

Kayaking around the island. The place we stayed at, Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow, has only been open for 6 months. Somehow, only one dude has kayaked around the island. Lauren and I took the two man kayak and powered our way around the island in a few hours. Great to see the whole island and stop at any beach we wanted to. Most with 0 people on them.

Trying unsuccessfully to walk around the perimeter of the island. After staring off on an exploring the island walk and ending up walking for 3 hours on the reef, without any shoes, an unprotected camera, in the extreme heat, it was time to give up. Luckily we came across Frank the tank standing on a rock in front of us, machete in hand, smile awaiting us. He seemed a little surprised to see what direction we came from, noting that we “had been on a long journey”. He then took us up to the land he was working on, to show us his horticultural skills as well as show us his coconut tree climbing skills (see pictures below). After he fed us fresh coconut milk, mangos, and oranges, he led us to the path that would take us back home fastest. On the way, he insisted on taking us to the “lighthouse”. This ended up being a 50ft tower in the center of the island. I gave it a go, got half way and climbed right down. No thank you. Frank called me a “coward”. Lauren then proceeded to scamper up the ladder in no time and enjoy the view of the whole island...

Listening to the local lingo.  “Wi don gat dat round ere” was the favourite for the week.
