After an excitingly modern flight in which we were even provided with snacks, we arrived in Iquitos, the largest city in the road unreachable by bus, or we probably would have undergone 100 hours in semi-cama to get there. We were met off the plane by a tour operator, and agreed to go to his office in the city to discuss tours. In his delight at this news, he showered us with a free transfer and took us to several hostels before we found one we liked. This delight was matched in scope only by his sense of betrayal when we went to his tour agency and, realising that even I had better organisational skills than him, rejected his tour. Ate that evening in a restaurant designed by a certain Mr Eiffel and shipped from France, though the resident mouse indicated that the class had faded from the building.
Next day we had a little explore round Iquitos. Felt very different to Andean Peru, and the hundreds of tuk tuks made it seem what we imagined Asia seems like. Very hot and muggy and noticeably poorer than other areas, though it was nice enough and good to be somewhere different. Booked a 3 day tour for the following day, then headed to see an LP recommended butterfly sanctuary and animal farm. First time on the amazon was on the river boat to get to it, so that weas pretty cool. Not as cool as the sanctuary itself though. The butterflies, though pretty, were a fairly minor attraction compared to the anacondas, monkeys, ocelot and jaguar! Nice introduction to the jungle wildlife we were hoping to encounter in the wild over the next few days.
