Where I stayed
Pocono Vacation Park
From the research that I had done back in Australia the easiest way to camp for a few days and to get into New York without worrying about parking and costing a fortune was to camp in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and take the bus in.
I ended up camping in the Pocono Mountain area in Pocono Vacation Park, which was a nice area. It had more amenities than a fair number of campgrounds I had stayed in (the best internet coverage by far - at least 5 connections in different areas and free, really nice washrooms and all the other features too). The plan was to spend the night here and commute into New York by bus (almost 2hrs away), giving it only two days (the bus fair alone was $50 round trip, although you could get a weekly ticket for a little more than $120. I planned to go in early and leave late, however the first day I went in was a Sunday so I left it a little later, leaving at 8am and arriving around 10am, then returned relatively early arriving back at 8pm. I was just getting used to the way things work what way to take in preparation for a weekday (highly expecting things to be much busier and different)
The area I stayed in was really nice, a forest type environment (although the campground was a little more open). A few nights there was a brilliant electrical storm and quite foggy, combined with the forest noises it was spectacularly eerie! It was just as well I did a practice drive to the bus station and back on the Saturday, before going to New York, because the drive back at night was a little different and with the fog quite easy to get lost (didn't help the only map of the area I got just showed the main highways connecting to each other either), but I managed OK.
I spaced out the days I went to NYC, so I could rest and relax in between and not feel rushed, which was helpful because I needed a sleep-in and also to do household chores (dishes and laundry...)
It was just as well I spaced it that way too because on the last night I caught a 10pm bus from NYC and arrived back around 12am, I feel if I had of combined them I wouldn't have done half the things I would like to have done during both those days.
