During the night for the first time in weeks we didn't have the air con on during the night. Today we drove down to Lakeside a poular snorkelling place adjacent to a tourist information centre (closed for renovations) and a gift shop of course. We continued further down the coast to Turquoise Bay a hot spot on the snorkelling map. It was a beautiful location with a drift spot beginning at one car park and ending at another. You enter the water at one point and the rip sweeps you along or down the beach. Luckily, there is a sand bar at the end to stop anyone from being swept out. The coral in close was ok but the fish colours and variety were spectacular. We had great fun just floating and watching everything go by. Around the corner was a more protected bay we the fish almost seem to follow your every movement. They were very inquisitive and enjoyed our company. The water was turquoise and a little more cooler than Broome but very refreshing.
We spent the whole morning just enjoying the serenity of a wonderful location.
In the afternoon I had little unsuccessful go at beach fishing. However, we were fortunate enough to see a turtle frolicking in the shallows.
At sunset we drove to the lighthouse lookout for spectacular views of the area. This included the Harold Holt COmmunication Base. It has 13 enormous towers designed to aid communications particularly between the US and Australia. It was built after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the realisation that there was a communications black spot.
