We departed 7.30 am for the 150 kilometre drive to Exmouth. We filled up before we left with petrol at $1.97 a litre however, the tank gage was only showing 346 available kilometres. To get to Exmouth via a short cut you turn off the North West Highway onto Burkett Road saving 150 kilometres so Kelli and I started doing fuel calculations to ensure we would make it to Exmouth. On this section of road there were no petrol stations anywhere. Being only 25 degrees we didn't need the air con and this saved an enormous amount of fuel. For the past five weeks this has not been option because of the heat.
We arrived at Exmouth at 10.30 am and visited tourist info centre and did some shopping. After shopping there was a traffic hold up as we waited for two emus in the main street to cross the road. We booked into the Lighthouse Caravan Park. It was 17 kilometres out of town and closer to the action (Ningaloo Reef) but fairly run down and in need of some serious maintenance. The pool was 3/4 full, the toilets stunk and the BBQ was unAustralian. After seeing the caravan park Emmy stated "dad don't listen to your friends anymore" because as we have travelled you talk and find out recommendations from people who have already been there.
Our first place to visit was the Turtle Centre. A "centre" is a slight exaggeration of its true status and it only consisted of a few interesting displays and lights down to the beach. Don't expect too much. November is the start of turtle egg laying season but we didn't see any. The gender of a turtle is determined by the temperature of the sand while they are being incubated.
Further down the coast we drove to Tantabiddi boat ramp and watched some guys fishing. They were having a great time trying to catch a six foot Tiger shark who was very interested in their bait. We drove back to Bungedi beach which looked beautiful if not a little intimidating especially after seeing the shark. Tomorrow we will explore the best snorkelling sites further down the coast away from Exmouth.
