Flag of Thailand  , Chiang Mai,
Monday, March 29, 2010

Doi Inthanon National Park consists of large mountains, waterfalls and lots of forest.  The entrance is 60km from Chiang Mai, which meant a fairly dull ride on a very uncomfortable scooter, down a very busy, smelly and noisy main road, with at least two very scary moments (Even scarier for my passenger who couldn't see what has happening but certainly felt it!).

The day here consisted of visiting a few Waterfalls, having a quick splash in a river with the locals, teaching my travel buddy to ride the Scooter (with only a minor incident!) and willing the scooter to actually reach the top of Doi Inthanon mountain, some 2565 meters high.

We were the only foreign people there, and certainly the only people stupid enough to have gone to the top a) by Scooter and b) wearing shorts and t-shirt.  It was COLD up there.  I like being the only foreign person around.  I don't go halfway across the world only to bump into my neighbours.

Coming down the mountain was interesting to say the least.  The sun was setting, it was getting colder, and the drive up the mountain used so much fuel we were running on fumes.  So much so, I decided to coast down the mountain....which resulted in serious overheating of the breaks....resulting in an almost crash down a very steep ravine.  After that decided to cool the brakes down every few minutes :-)

We finally found fuel at a Hmong tibal village.  With universal sign language and lots of pointing, we were directed to an old lady hand pumping dirty fuel for a few pennies.  Deal.

I love Thailand.
