So, we've established I had a great time in Vang Vieng. But the real reason why I liked it so much? The local area.
Renting a pooey 110cc Scooter, I set forth to see some of the local villages, down long dust dirt paths. It was epic.
I saw all sorts of wildlife, from Butterflies to Spiders to really big cows; I chatted with lots of happy locals; I was taught how to fix a shitty Scooter that kept breaking down; I learnt I could push said Scooter 5km back to town when it really did die; I saw lots of stunning scenery and I avoided most of the morons back in town. Woot!
Go to Vang Vieng, have fun, but spend two days at least on a bicycle or Scooter, exploring the local area, interacting with real locals, and go further than the sodding Blue Lagoon! There is so much more if you simply keep going...
