Where I stayed
Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park
Port Hedland didn't warrant a longer stay than one night, so after a brief drive into the town centre, past the large Iron Ore works, we were soon on the way north, towards Broome and The Kimberley area.
Not wanting to drive for 6 hours to Broome, we eventually ended up at the Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park. There is nothing else around here, except for a lonely roadhouse, so it made sense to stop over. Situated right on the beach, it's main attration is fishing. Although the sea here is tropical, it's not recommended you swim in it - it's not patroled and it has been known to harbour a few nasties in there.
So we didn't really do too much, much like everyone else here. Most people are here for a few months, elderly folk from the south, who headed north for the sun and the fishing. Nothing else happens. So we spent the day at leisure, mooching around on the pristine beach and relaxing in the shade of the caravan park.
With it being full moon again, we ventured down to the beach to see if we can see the Staircase to the Moon again. As it happens, no we couldn't, as the Moon rose behind us, not over the sea. So with that not happening, we mucked around in the pitch dark, as you can see from the photos. The last time I was on a cold, pitch black beach at night, was on a school trip with the Army, who to punish us made us run down the beach. At least tonight I didn't get shouted at by a soldier.
It was a lovely place to stay, but too relaxing and laid back for us. We were both itching to do something constructive.
