Okay, I didn't write this. I couldn't have. From the Times of India, February 14, 2010, this one's for the record:
V-Day effect? TN schools teach 'what is real love'
Dindigul: Worried about the impact of Valentines Day celebrations on teenage girls, schools in Dindigul and Theni districts of Tamil Nadu, have started counselling 7th to 10th standard students on what is real love and infatuation . On condition of anonymity, an official of a minority school said they were even checking their bags to find out if they carried any V-Day cards and gifts after complaints were received from parents about obscene cards and SMSs sent to their children.
"We are not against love. But we dont want our students to go astray and spoil their future. Many students are getting infatuated without realizing its seriousness and the impact that it could cause", the official added. We educate them on what is real and practical life. Due to infatuation , some students even failed in exams. We have corrected such students and made them score good marks. Now, we are monitoring the students and advise them, as this is not the right age for love affairs", the official said.
According to the principal of a private school in Dindigal rural district, they found incriminating love letters... cards in the bags of some girls and were shocked. We called them privately and advised them. It is upto them to listen.
In some schools, teachers call the parents and handover to them the V-Day greeting cards received for their children. We ask parents to keep a watch on their kids, the principal said. We tell them the real stories of students who have been ruined by infatuation . There is definitely no place for love in schools , said a correspondent (administrator) of a private school at Kodaikanal in Theni district.
We dont want parents to blame us if their children slipped in life due to infatuation. That is why we have asked schools to take steps to protect children from the impact of Valentines Day. All this is done through oral instructions and with public support , said K Mohan a member of Parent Teachers Association in Theni district. AGENCIES
