I had plans of spending some time on the beach in Barcelona, but they were dashed even before we got there! Half way along, the train stopped at a station and after a short time, we worked out that everyone was being asked to leave the train. From there, we were led out to the front of the station, and left standing there, trying to work out what was going on. No one spoke English, so we were really confused about what was happening! After about five minutes, we found someone who could translate, and he told us that there was flooding in Barcelona and train lines were closed - instead we'd be going the rest of the way on busses. When we eventually got there, it wasn't raining hard anymore, but the weather still wasn't very nice for the rest of our stay!
We read that we were staying in a red light district, and that there would be prostitution activity outside - but that because of the high police presence, it was safe - so we were both really disappointed when we got there and couldn't see any! In the end, the hotel itself was awful anyway, so we decided to move somewhere else the next night. When we arrived there at 3:30pm the next afternoon, no one was around to let us in. We came back at four, and there was a couple waiting in the stairwell who were also trying to check in. We waited with them for another half an hour, before the guy finally arrived to let us in - we'd got there during siesta time!
In a case of 'small world syndrome', we met a guy who lived in the suburb across from Jen, and who was friends with at least a few of her friends and cousins. A week or so later, he ended up meeting up with us in Venice, and coming along to Vienna and Munich.
Coolest City thing: The Guidi designed park, and buildings!
