We decided to go see some whales today and realised that the best place was from Brier Island which was a small island at the bottom of Digby Neck - a small strip of land alongside the Bay of Fundy. The owners booked us on a small boat and advised us that we had to drive down to the first island to catch the boat by 10.30 and it was now 9.50 and the distance was 45 km on a small road! Into Italian mode driving and we arrived with 10 minutes to spare and only one near mishap when I swerved to avoid a mink running in front of me - Christine wouldn't wear a fur coat so the mink got away. The first ferry took us to the island and then we drove until we met the other ferry to take us to Brier Island - luckily the journeys were really short.

We had time to walk around the area before setting off at 12:30 - really quaint little houses and a few shops. A little girl did explain to Christine that her rabbit had just bitten her and needed some sympathy - we saw her a few times while wondering around and thankfully the finger was recovering.

Finally we set off on a very sunny and calm day - plenty of sunscreen for me and Christine was confident as it was so calm. I was soon in spotting mode and it reminded me of the safaris we had been on where the anticipation was rising each minute. A few cries went out but it was for porpoises and dolphins. After about an hour I must admit I was getting worried but finally we could see spray ahead. As we approached we realised that there were 3 humpbacks just lying there and waiting for us before they decided to move. This was a little unusual as they are fairly solitary mammals. I had a chance to get some great shots of the three of them and lots of tails and fins as they came really close to the boat. We watched for about 2 hours before another boat approached and therefore it was time to go and let somebody else see them.

On the way back to the island we met another couple from Barcelona and had a chat about travelling as they we here for a month with their son and travelling around Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. We said we were going to visit Barcelona this year so she gave us her email address and insisted we contact her and she will meet us in Barcelona to show us the places to see and the restaurants to eat in - sounds like a good idea. We also got talking to a couple from New Zealand who had bought an RV in Oregon and were travelling around the States and Canada as they had rented there house out for the year - what a coincidence. I was able to pickup some good hints on cost and size of vehicle etc - just in case Trish and Steve are still thinking about it!!!

A great day and it has made my holiday. I have also booked a whale trip in Newfoundland and one in Iceland later this year so I might be tired of them by the end of the year.
