Howdy folks,

I finished up the last week of Deutsch C1/1 and I only have C1/2 to go. I don't know how much my German has improved over the last month, but I have certainly come across a few complicated sentences. We are doing a lot of work with indirect speech and adjectives which seem overly done to me, but I guess grammatically correct. Sentences such as...

Anhand des medizinischen Gutachtens, kann die Einnahme des Aufputschmittels besser kontrolliert werden. (With the help of the medical opinon, the use of the stimulant can be better controlled).

Tee soll getrunken worden sein. (Tea should have been drunk).

Die in diesem Gebiet lebenden Tiere konnten Ihren Artenbestand in den letzten Jahren verdoppeln. (The locally living animals were able to double their species number in the last few years.)!!!

Language is a complicated thing. Most of the time there isn't a direct translation that you can make so you have to learn how it makes sense in German and not English. I have the basics mastered, but when it comes to more than conversational German, it takes me a lot longer to get my thoughts together. For example take the words climbing mountains; that could be taken figuratively or exactly. And if you say mountain climber then you instantly get an image of what that is. It is an interesting experience, that is for sure. Most people just take it for granted that they can say what they want.

The weather hasn't been too bad this week, but it has been quite overcast with temperatures around freezing. I think that at this point if we haven't seen any snow on the streets then it will stay that way for the rest of the winter. Definitely a big difference to Canada!

With January gone, it is interesting to see how far my resolutions have come!

1. Alcohol. Haven't drunk any alcohol for a month! I haven't been without alcohol this long since I was at Adelaide Uni and I went a good 6 weeks during one of my poor moments. It is quite hard to go without alcohol, especially in Germany where it is available and affordable. Time to party...

2. Fitness. Steffie and I have been swimming twice a week and doing the Rathaus steps twice a week. I have also been doing chin ups everyday and I have gone from 8 to 10 so a definite improvement. Steffie also climbed the Köningstuhl with me yesterday in just one hour. Not bad for a first attempt and an elevation gain of 360m. The tough thing about this hike is it is all steps: 1600 of them! The ones at the bottom aren't too bad because they are quite even, but past the Schloss and they are just laid stones and quite steep in places. At the top there was still a little bit of snow lying around; the first snow I have seen this winter!

3. Duales Studium. With some luck I managed to get a Praktikum place at the Hotel Bayrischer Hof in Heidelberg which start next weeks. What that means is 4 weeks of unpaid work experience, but if it all goes well then I can work there for the next 3 years of my studies.

I would be just happy to escape the language school!
